The Boston Athletic Association has signed Chinese smartphone brand Oppo as the latest sponsor of the Boston Marathon.
The deal was brokered by sports marketing agency Lagardère Sports China, the Chinese arm of the French sports marketing agency. It will run for four years, through the Boston Marathon’s 2023 edition.
The two organisations will promote Oppo’s smartphone and smartwatch products, with marathon runners able to use Oppo’s watch technology to detect physiological data during the race.
The agreement aligns with the brand’s anticipated expansion into the American market.
Sport sponsorship has been a cornerstone of the brand’s recent global expansion. Oppo has signed major deals with cricket governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), tennis grand slam event Wimbledon, LaLiga club Barcelona and, in September 2019, with the League of Legends esports series.
The launch event for Oppo’s sponsorship of the Boston Marathon will be limited to online streaming due to the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.
The 2020 edition of the race is due to take place on Monday, April 20. The marathon’s sponsorship portfolio is headlined by insurance firm John Hancock and its official apparel sponsor adidas.
