Blockchain technology company Algorand has announced it will no longer activate its sponsorship rights as a Regional Supporter of the current Fifa World Cup, revealing in a social media post that it plans to focus on the ‘technical development’ aspects of its partnership with the governing body.
In May, the proof-of-stake blockchain was announced as a Regional Supporter of the 2022 event in Qatar and as a global sponsor of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The Regional Supporter category is the third tier in Fifa’s sponsorship hierarchy, granting brands the opportunity to activate around a single edition of the World Cup in clearly defined territories. Algorand’s regional rights covered North America and Europe.
