Following the release of Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner from a Russian penal colony, Women's National Basketball Association commissioner Cathy Engelbert stated the league will continue to support players' decisions to continue to play overseas if they choose to do so.

Griner was one of many WNBA stars to head overseas during the league's offseason in search of better pay. She was convicted on drug charges in August and spent 294 days following her February detention in Russia prior to her release in a high-profile prisoner swap deal.
