Women's National Basketball Association star Brittney Griner has secured her release from a Russian penal colony in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout following a high-profile prisoner swap between the United States and Russian governments.

Griner was sentenced to a nine-year prison term by a Russian court in August, having been arrested in February in Moscow for drug possession and smuggling charges and detained since then. In addition to the prison term, she was also fined one million rubles ($16,551/€16,179).
