The Gallagher Premiership is planning to stage another rugby union fixture on United States soil in the spring of 2020, SportBusiness understands.
The game is likely to take place in Chicago, the home city of US insurance company Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., the league’s title sponsor. An announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
AEG Rugby, a subsidiary of sports and entertainment conglomerate AEG, will help organize and promote the game.
The English top flight previously held games in the US in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. London Irish took on Saracens at Red Bull Arena, in Harrison, New Jersey, in March 2016, while Saracens faced Newcastle at Talen Energy Stadium, Philadelphia, in September 2017.
A US game during the 2018-19 Premiership season was put on hold after private equity firm CVC Capital Partners secured a minority stake in the league in December 2018 and Gallagher looked to formulate its business plan after taking over its naming rights that campaign.
Major League Rugby team Rugby United New York is also looking to stage an official club game overseas in 2020.
