Budapest’s Mayor, Gergely Karácsony, has found himself at loggerheads with the Hungarian government over the staging of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in the city amid the proposed development of a new campus for China’s Fudan University.

Budapest’s metropolitan assembly yesterday (Wednesday) approved a proposal brought forward by Karácsony declaring that the capital will not host the Championships if the government approves the construction of a campus for the Shanghai-based university in place of the Student City in Budapest’s ninth district.
