The Qatar Foundation has sent a letter to students and faculty members at several international universities in Doha’s Education City offering them free tickets to the IAAF World Athletics Championships.

The IAAF and local organising committee (LOC) have been heavily criticised for the poor attendances at the championships which have seen some finals take place in front of swathes of empty seats. Before the event started, the LOC denied reports that migrant workers and children would be offered free tickets to boost attendances, stating only that children were being offered a 20-per-cent discount to the event as part of an outreach campaign to younger fans.
