Biggest-ever Paralympics opens in Tokyo

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics officially opened yesterday (Tuesday), with organisers hailing the biggest-ever athlete contingent for making it to the Games against a challenging pandemic backdrop.

More than 4,400 athletes, from 161 countries and regions, will compete across 22 sports, in 539 medal events. The athlete number is up from just over 4,300 at Rio 2016.
