The Australian Football League is aiming to appoint a new chief executive early next year. The departure date for current chief executive Gillon McLachlan has been set for after round five of the 2023 season on April 13-16.

McLachlan was originally due to leave at the end of this year, after negotiating the AFL's new domestic media rights agreements. In September, he announced he would stay on to oversee the league's response to several outstanding issues, including a major racism scandal at the Hawthorn Football Club, negotiations for a new player pay ("collective bargaining") agreement, and the proposed addition of a 19th team, in Tasmania.
