German sportswear manufacturer Adidas and Italian fashion house Prada are partnering to produce limited edition footwear, including sailing shoes under Prada’s Luna Rossa label.
The deal extends Prada’s involvement in sailing – the company sponsors the Prada Luna Rossa sailing team, which is fully owned by its chief executive Patrizio Bertelli, and has a title sponsorship deal with the America’s Cup competition.
The Adidas-Prada collection launches next month with two styles of trainers. The release of the sailing footwear is planned for 2020.
The tie-up is considered a surprise in the fashion industry and a coup for the German company given Prada’s historic reticence for collaborative projects.
Adidas has previously worked on high-end fashion collaborations with partners including Stella McCarthy, Rick Owens and Kanye West’s Yeezy line.
A press release by Prada said the collaboration was “to investigate the realms of heritage, technology and innovation – and to challenge conventional wisdom through unexpected strategies.” The shoes will be “based on an authentic fusion of fashion and sport” that mixes their “sporting heritage and visionary approach”.
