NHL returns to Europe with regular-season games in Sweden

North American ice hockey league the NHL has announced that the Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators will travel to the Swedish capital of Stockholm this November as part of the league’s Global Series initiative.

Stockholm’s Ericsson Globe arena will host the double-header from November 10-11. It will mark the sixth time the NHL has staged a regular-season game in Europe, and the first time since 2011.

Both the Avalanche and the Senators are captained by Swedish players in Gabriel Landeskog and Erik Karlsson, respectively. Swedes Anton Lindholm and Carl Soderberg also play for Colorado, while countrymen Frederik Claesson and Viktor Stalberg turn out for the Senators.

“We have more Swedish players than ever in the NHL, and we are extremely pleased that the 2017 NHL Global Series will allow us to showcase a number of those players, with their NHL teams, in their homeland," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "The return of regular-season NHL games to the international stage will provide yet another highlight for our centennial celebration."

The games will mark the seventh and eighth regular-season fixtures played in Sweden, and the 21st and 22nd in Europe overall.
