The National Basketball Association has announced it is developing a new ‘NBA Experience’ destination at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
Through a joint development project with entertainment conglomerate the Walt Disney Company, the new NBA Experience at Walt Disney World Resort will feature various hands-on activities that will allow guests of all ages to experience NBA game action.
Guests will have access to various immersive NBA video productions and a range of interactive experiences, in addition to an on-site restaurant and retail store. The new facility will be based in the Lake Buena Vista area in the Orange County region of Florida.
The NBA and the Walt Disney Company have worked on a number of projects in the past through a long-term relationship between the league and Disney-owned US sports broadcaster ESPN. The NBA destination will be the latest addition to Walt Disney World Resort’s various sports facilities, which include the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Opened in 1997, the athletic complex is located in the Bay Lake area of the Resort.
NBA Experience will be included in the new Disney Springs project, which represents the largest expansion in Downtown Disney history. Disney Springs will be home to four distinct, outdoor neighbourhoods opening in phases: The Landing, Town Center, Marketplace and West Side. When fully completed in 2016, Disney Springs will double the number of shopping, dining and entertainment venues – from the current 70 to approximately 150.
“We’re thrilled to work with the NBA to take our guests inside the world of professional basketball with an extraordinary entertainment experience,” Walt Disney Company chairman and chief executive, Robert Iger, said. “We’ve had a long and successful partnership with the NBA through ESPN, and we will continue to build on that foundation as we bring the Disney and NBA brands together for the first time in this exciting and innovative way.”
NBA commissioner Adam Silver added: “Working with the world’s top creator and operator of themed entertainment attractions, we can’t wait to bring the magic of Disney and the excitement of the NBA to guests from around the world.”
