Minsk to host ‘Ryder Cup of athletics’ in 2019

European Athletics and USA Track and Field have signed an agreement to host a Ryder Cup-style athletics match between Europe and the US next year.

The newly-revamped Dinamo Stadium in Minsk, Belarus, will play host to the contest on September 9 and 10, 2019, with athletes expected to use the event as a warm-up for the IAAF World Championships in Doha at the end of that month.

The 2019 European Athletics Team Championships will act as the qualifying event for the match, which is the latest innovation intended to boost the popularity of track and field away from the Olympics.

Svein Arne Hansen, the president of European Athletics, confirmed that the tournament would see athletes competing in every track discipline up to 3,000m, as well as all throw and jump events.

The 22,000-seat Dinamo Stadium is also set to host the track and field events at the 2019 European Games, which take place June 21-30.
