French Ligue 1 football club Olympique Lyonnais has reached an agreement with LDLC Event, which operates the Team LDLC esports outfit for Groupe LDLC, in a move designed to strengthen the team’s presence in the professional gaming scene.
Team LDLC is the defending champion of the League of Legends French league and has now joined forces with OL eSports. The teams will merge and be known as LDLC OL.
The team, which also competes in titles such as FIFA, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Fortnite and the World Rally Championship, will play in a new esports facility in Lyon. The facility will also house a training centre at the team.
It is hoped the link-up will develop esports facilities throughout the region to attract domestic and international talent. OL Groupe will look to develop partnerships for the team and will also broadcast esports news through club media.
Olympique Lyonnais has an existing relationship with Groupe LDLC having last year completed a deal to acquire a minority shareholding in local LNB Pro A basketball team ASVEL.
Lyon also has plans to open a new 16,000-seat arena next to its Groupama Stadium home ground and the club said its esports efforts will be given a boost then this comes to fruition amid plans to stage major gaming competitions at the venue.
