Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment – the ownership group of the NBA Philadelphia 76ers and NHL New Jersey Devils – is taking a deeper dive into the esports industry by investing in start-up measurement and data analytics company StreamMetrics.
Harris Blitzer has two esports properties in its portfolio: NBA 2K League team 76ers Gaming Club, and the Dignitas franchise, which has teams that compete in Rocket League, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Super Smash Bros. Melee, SMITE, Apex Legends, and Clash Royale.
Earlier this year, Dignitas acquired a majority stake in Clutch Gaming, the League of Legends franchise currently owned and operated by the NBA’s Houston Rockets, which will compete under the Dignitas brand in 2020.
Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment Ventures, an investment subsidiary firm, has now become the lead seed investor in StreamMetrics, which provides brands, advertisers, and esports teams and leagues detailed demographic and geographically-relevant information on the viewership of esports live streams across multiple platforms. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Demographic information on the StreamMetrics Audience Measurement data service includes age, gender, location, household income, employment status, ethnicity, and device type. According to a press release, it “answers the industry demand for an audience measurement standard”.
The company is preparing for a Series A funding round in September.
