Basketball Africa League tips off aiming to develop local talent, spur economic growth

A new era for basketball in Africa began on May 16 with the opening game of the inaugural Basketball Africa League, a new tournament designed to grow the sport in the continent, develop local talent and spur widespread economic growth.

The two-week quarantined tournament in Kigali, Rwanda, began with host team Patriots Basketball Club defeating Nigerian club Rivers Hoopers 83-60, a game which featured American rapper J. Cole making his professional basketball debut.
