Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos is reportedly interested in purchasing a National Football League team.

With a net worth of more than $110bn, Bezos would comfortably be the richest owner in the league. According to CBS Sports, he has support among NFL owners to join their ranks.

There are currently no teams available for purchase but the Seattle Seahawks will soon be put up for sale following the death of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen last year, while the NFL has “concern” about the Denver Broncos’ ownership situation following mounting lawsuits from the various heirs to the team.

Bezos – who is is already involved in the NFL with internet company Amazon gaining the streaming rights to Thursday Night Football – has reportedly become close with Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder and could aid the team’s pursuit of a new stadium.

The Carolina Panthers were the last NFL team sold, to hedge fund billionaire David Tepper, in a deal worth a record $2.275bn.
