The pandemic-delayed 2021 Southeast Asian Games officially got underway in Hanoi yesterday (Thursday) with fireworks, dancers and musical entertainment featuring in an opening ceremony at My Dinh National Stadium.

The Games was originally due to take place in October and November last year but was postponed because of the pandemic. The event is a milestone in the return of normal life, and the comeback of sports events, in Vietnam and wider Southeast Asia. Restrictions on travel, business and everyday life have eased markedly this year across the region, following two years of heavy disruption.
