Esports showpiece the League of Legends World Championship will return to China next year, with Shanghai Stadium named as host.

The announcement was made by Championship organiser Riot Games yesterday (Sunday) as this year’s event drew to a close at the AccorHotels Arena in Paris, France.

Touted as the world’s most-watched esports event, Shanghai will host the 10th World Championship Finals in 2020 at the 55,000-seat home of Chinese Super League football club Shanghai SIPG.

Shanghai hosted the 2017 World Championship semi-finals, with the Chinese city also the headquarters of the LPL, China’s leading League of Legends league. That year’s Finals were held at Beijing National Stadium, the venue otherwise known as the Bird’s Nest.

Incheon’s Munhak Stadium hosted the 2018 Finals, while the 2016 event took place at Madison Square Garden in New York.
