South Africa’s major events bidding strategy is now focused on competitions featuring just one sport due to the wider infrastructure requirements for larger events, according to Sam Ramsamy, the honorary president of SASCOC, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.

Speaking at the Host City conference in Glasgow, the 84-year-old sports administrator reflected on Birmingham stepping in to stage this year’s Commonwealth Games after Durban was stripped of the hosting rights (in 2017), and played down the chances of South Africa bidding for multi-sport events in the future.
