Major League Soccer team New York City FC has decided to move four regular season games to Citi Field, the home of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets, in 2020.
NYCFC calls another baseball field, Yankee Stadium, its regular home. Dubbed ‘The Citi Field Series’, the matches will be on Sunday, April 26; Saturday, July 25; Saturday, August 8; and Saturday, September 26.
According to a press release “the decision eliminates four midweek games, in favor of weekend matches, and minimizes congestion throughout the season”.
NYCFC has played two previous games at Citi Field due to scheduling issues with the New York Yankees, the team’s co-owners and primary tenants of Yankee Stadium. These were a 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew in the 2017 regular season finale and a 2-1 loss to Toronto FC in this year’s Eastern Conference semi-finals.
NYCFC chief executive Brad Sims said in a statement: “We are committed to delivering the best fan experience to our dedicated and passionate supporters and we have heard from them that midweek games are less convenient than weekend matchups. Additionally, we believe that reducing the number of occasions where we play three games in eight days will be a great competitive benefit for our players. While Yankee Stadium remains our home, Citi Field has emerged as an incredible alternative venue for us and moving four dates from midweek to weekends is the best option for our fans and players alike.”
The full 2020 MLS schedule will be announced in the coming days.
