New electric racing series sets out expansion plans

Electric GT, organiser of new electric car-racing championship the Electric Production Car Series (EPCS), has revealed plans to open up the event to new manufacturers, adding that it has already received significant levels of interest.

Although calendar plans have yet to be formally confirmed, the EPCS is set to open its inaugural season in Jerez, Spain in December, with a total of eight events provisionally scheduled. US manufacturer Tesla will be the sole manufacturer partner for 2018-19, but Electric GT has detailed growth plans through the release of a five-year technical roadmap.

The Autosport website said that other manufacturers may enter from season three, with Electric GT adding in a statement that from the fourth season the EPCS will become an “open-platform series, following GT/LMP closed-wheel style body specifications”.

Electric GT added that a number of global manufacturers, including a growing number of Asian constructors, have shown “great interest” in joining the championship, and are already in contact to draw up common regulations that meet the interests of all manufacturers.

“We made history when we launched the first electric production car series, and now we are preparing the series to evolve and grow,” Agustin Paya, technical director of Electric GT Holdings, said.

“Our five-year plan has been developed following discussion with leading global manufacturers and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to best predict, and respond to, the continued rapid growth of electric vehicle technology.

“Our championship will be relevant, fast and continue to drive technology forward. We will also continue to work with manufacturers of new sustainable materials, in the car and at our events, to surprise and delight our fans. This series will truly prove that electric technology has surpassed the possibilities of all that has gone before.”

In April, the EPCS stepped up its launch plans by agreeing a partnership with the Mediapro agency. Under the deal between Mediapro and Electric GT, the agency will produce and distribute the series around the world.

The EPCS is the first fully-electric production car race series sanctioned by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
