The International Boxing Association (Aiba) has retained McLaren Global Sport Solutions (MGSS) to conduct a two-phase independent investigation, starting with an analysis of the refereeing and judging of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games boxing tournament, before moving into historical corruption allegations connected to the world governing body.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) identified the refereeing and judging of the tournament as an issue in the report which ultimately led to Aiba’s suspension in June 2019. The IOC officially stripped Aiba of its Olympic status, confirming that a boxing tournament would go ahead at the Tokyo Olympics without the involvement of the sport’s Olympic federation.
