The South American Football Confederation (Conembol) has renewed global payments firm Mastercard’s sponsorship of regional international tournament, the Copa América, for its next two editions.
The brand’s association with the competition dates back to 1991 and will now carry through the 2020 and 2024 events. In addition, the deal will extend to the women’s Copa América Feminina for the first time in 2022.
As part of the agreement, Mastercard is afforded the designation of ‘Official brand of payments for approximation (contactless payments) in South American football’, granting it exclusivity in the payments category. It also gets global rights to use the Copa América tournament and brand name and exclusive rights to trophies and player mascot experiences.
The company has an extensive presence across football and wider sport. Currently, it holds contracts with high-profile properties including the Uefa Champions League; tennis grand slams the French Open and the Australian Open; golf major The Open; The PGA Tour; The Rugby World Cup; and Major League Baseball.
Its previous extension with Conmebol included sponsorship rights to the region’s premier club tournament, the Copa Libetadores.
The 2020 men’s Copa América will take place in Argentina, whilst the 2022 women’s event will be held in Uruguay.
