Las Vegas to host inaugural MLS-Liga MX Leagues Cup final

The inaugural final of the Leagues Cup – a new mid-season competition between Major League Soccer and Liga MX teams – will take place September 18 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The event is being organized with the support of MGM Resorts and Las Vegas Events.

The Concacaf-sanctioned tournament will feature four clubs from each league in an eight-team single-elimination tournament that launches with quarter-finals on July 23 and 24.

That the final is being held in Las Vegas represents a potential boost for the city to gain an MLS expansion slot. Two Las Vegas groups are looking to gain a spot in MLS, one led by Golden Knights owner Bill Foley, and another looking to take over United Soccer League Championship club Las Vegas Lights.

“Las Vegas is an exciting market that has become a destination for professional teams and marquee sports events, and we’re proud to bring the inaugural Leagues Cup final to the city,” said MLS commissioner Don Garber in a statement.

ESPN is among the North American broadcast partners of the Leagues Cup.
