FanDuel has become the first online sportsbook in the United States to offer esports betting, with the new source of gambling initially available in New Jersey.
The first lines available were on the League of Legends World Championship final scheduled for November 10 in Paris.
The move follows New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement allowing the state’s casinos and racetracks to offer bets on competitive video game tournaments. Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa casino took the state’s first bet on the League of Legends final on November 7.
“Borgata is proud to be at the forefront of this significant milestone as we look to engage with future generations of esports fans as well as traditional sports fans,” said Borgata president Marcus Glover.
In 2016, the Downtown Grand in Las Vegas built an esports lounge, hosted tournaments and, with bookmaker William Hill, took the first sports wager placed in Nevada on an esports tournament. Major gambling companies including Casesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International have also invested in esports tournaments and facilities.
