Deutsche Telekom has reworked its Euro 2024 sublicensing agreement with commercial broadcaster RTL to allow it to regain exclusivity to five matches from the tournament staged across Germany.
Under the original sublicensing agreement unveiled in March 2021, RTL acquired free-to-air rights to 17 matches from the tournament with public broadcasters ARD and ZDF picking up free-to-air rights to 34 matches. Deutsche Telekom retained rights to showcase all 51 matches on its MagentaTV subscription platform.
However, under the terms of a new co-operation announced between the telecoms operator and RTL, the latter’s output has been cut to 12 matches.
Deutsche Telekom will show four group-stage matches and a round-of-16 clash exclusively.
The revision of the rights allocation is wrapped up in a wider partnership to work together on a jointly operated TV studio and production infrastructure during the tournament. RTL’s headquarters in Cologne will be deployed as the production base for both broadcasters.
The dozen RTL matches will be produced jointly from the studios and shown simultaneously on the flagship RTL channel, the RTL+ streaming service and also MagentaTV. RTL has also acquired multi-platform highlights from all 51 matches.
During the initial rights exchange, Deutsche Telekom secured non-exclusive rights from ARD and ZDF to all matches from the delayed Euro 2020 tournament and the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
