The International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) has awarded hosting rights for the 2020 edition of its Senior World Championships to China.
The event will be staged in Chengdu, Shanghai or Beijing, with the city to be confirmed at a later date.
This year’s event took place from August 21-29 in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, while the 2018 and 2019 events will be held in Mexico City and Budapest, Hungary respectively.
The hosting-rights decision was made at the UIPM’s Congress, where it was also announced the Laser-Run World Championships will be incorporated into the 2019 Senior World Championships in the Hungarian capital.
The Laser-Run World Championships debuted in 2015 and the UIPM said: “Laser-Run is UIPM's fastest-growing development sport and this new integrated competition will highlight the pathway that exists to the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon and promote the benefits of cross-over between the two sports.”
Meanwhile, the UIPM has added the national federations of Togo, Mali and Niger as members, and confirmed its U19 and U17 World Championships will be merged.
The UIPM also said its branding would be reviewed with a view to introducing new logos and brand guidelines for internal and external promotion.
