Money from Murdoch’s pay-television operations has transformed the fortunes of sports leagues around the world over the last 30 years and suddenly it looks like the tap is about to be turned off. 

Esports company ESL has entered into a partnership with sports and live entertainment firm Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) in an effort to extend its global reach, while interactive entertainment company Activision Blizzard has appointed veteran Fox Sports executive Pete Vlastelica to lead its Major League Gaming (MLG) arm.

The Fox Sports division of US network Fox and a number of major sports leagues have become the latest investors to plough money into DraftKings as the daily fantasy sports provider confirmed it has raised $300m (€270.3m) in additional funding to support international expansion plans.

US pay-television broadcaster Fox Sports and the Associated Press news agency have agreed to sell sports technology, data and content company Stats to private equity firm Vista Equity Partners.
