Legislation tabled to legalise sports betting in Virginia

In the wake of the US Supreme Court decision earlier this year to allow sports gaming, six states have already moved quickly to allow betting on sporting events in their states. Virginia might be among the next to approve sports betting.

This week, competing legislation was filed in Virginia by State Legislatures that would allow betting on professional sports and create a state regulatory agency to tax the potential gambling. The Virginia Lottery, an existing agency that manages the current gambling setup in the state, has expressed interest in overseeing sports gaming as well.

Virginia is likely to approve some sort of form of gambling but whether the activity is limited to casinos or allowed online remains to be worked out in 2019.
