The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has awarded hosting rights for its 2019 World Championships to the Thai city of Pattaya.
The IWF reached the unanimous decision during an executive board meeting in Penang, Malaysia ahead of the city's staging of the Youth World Championships, which began today (Thursday).
The Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association will oversee the organisation of the 2019 World Championships. Dates for the event have not yet been confirmed.
It will mark the third time that Thailand has staged the World Championships, with Chiang Mai having hosted the event in 1997 and 2007.
Earlier this week, the IWF reallocated the 2017 World Championships to Anaheim in the United States after Penang was forced to give up its hosting rights for the event.
The IWF did not explain the reasons for Penang’s withdrawal and only stated publicly that the city had “encountered difficulties.” The event will now be held from November 28 to December 5 next year at the Anaheim Convention Center.
It will mark the second successive US edition of the event after Houston hosted the 2015 championships. The event will travel to the Peruvian capital of Lima for its 2018 edition before Pattaya plays host in 2019.
