Sacramento poised to join NWSL in 2020 – report

The city of Sacramento, California, is close to landing a National Women’s Soccer League team as well as a Major League Soccer team.

Ahead of an expected announcement on October 21 that Sacramento Republic will join MLS, it has been reported that the USL Championship team’s ownership group is in advanced discussions with the NWSL to add a team in 2020.

The likely addition of a Sacramento franchise will bring the NWSL back to 10 teams.

USL Championship club Louisville City and MLS team Atlanta United are looking to add teams to the NWSL in 2021, The Equalizer added.

French club Olympique Lyonnais is, meanwhile, in talks to take over an existing NWSL team. LaLiga giants FC Barcelona is also looking to set up a team in the NWSL, but is insisting on a sponsorship exemption to wear Nike kits indefinitely.
