Global payments provider Mastercard and brewing company Ambev have de-activated their sponsorship of the upcoming Copa América tournament as concerns rise about the event’s safety in Covid-19-affected Brazil.

According to the Reuters news agency, Mastercard decided not to activate its sponsorship of the Copa América in Brazil “after a thorough analysis” and will temporarily remove its branding from the event.

AB InBev ‘s Brazil-based subsidiary Ambev, also said "its brands will not be present at the Copa América".

Brazil was hastily selected as tournament hosts last week, when the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) dropped Colombia as co-host because of civil unrest and Argentina withdrew because of rising cases of the virus.
