Seventeen of the 20 top-tier Ligue 1 teams posted a loss for the 2020-21 season, according to the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG), the body responsible for monitoring the financial affairs of French football clubs.
The Covid-19 pandemic, which forced matches to be closed behind closed doors from October 2020 until the end of the season, was a major contributing factor in the losses announced by the DNCG.
