Leigh Sports Village replaces City Ground as Euro 2021 host venue

Leigh Sports Village has replaced Nottingham Forest’s City Ground as one of the host venues for the 2021 Uefa Women’s Championship national team football tournament.

Leigh Sports Village serves as the home stadium and training base of Manchester United Women, which formed last year and secured promotion to the top-tier Women’s Super League in its first season. The ground is also home to the Leigh Centurions rugby league team.

The announcement is a further boost to Leigh Sports Village, which is already set to host three games during the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. It replaces the City Ground, which has become unviable as a Euro 2021 host venue due to a planned refurbishment of the stadium.

England was awarded hosting rights to Women’s Euro 2021 in December 2018. The country was the only bidder for the tournament, which it last hosted in 2005.

Wembley will host the final of Women’s Euro 2021 – a year after it hosts the final of the Euro 2020 men’s tournament. Other host venues for Euro 2021 are Bramall Lane in Sheffield, Brentford Community Stadium, Brighton’s Amex Stadium, Manchester City Academy Stadium, New York Stadium in Rotherham, Stadium MK in Milton Keynes and Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium

Around 700,000 tickets are due to be made available for Women’s Euro 2021. England will qualify automatically as tournament hosts and will be joined by 15 other teams.
