IPC Swimming shifts Championships to avoid LEN event clash

The International Paralympic Committee Swimming organisation has switched the dates of its 2016 European Open Championships in Funchal, Portugal to avoid clashing with the European Swimming League (LEN) European Aquatics Championships.

The European Open Championships will now take place from April 30 to May 7 next year. The LEN-operated event will take place from May 9-22 in London, UK.

Agnes Szilak, the IPC Swimming’s sport manager, said: “We want to ensure that the eyes of the world are on para-swimmers during the European Open, and that fans and the media can enjoy Funchal 2016 without having to choose between our event and other major international swimming competitions happening at the time. The Portuguese Swimming Federation have been working hard to ensure we can meet this aspiration, and we are delighted and grateful that they were able to be flexible with the dates.”

The European Open Championships will be staged at the Complexo Olimpico de Piscinas da Penteada, which opened in 2004.
