Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey becomes Austin FC minority owner

Hollywood actor and Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey has become a minority owner of Major League Soccer expansion team Austin FC.

Texas native McConaughey is one of four local investors joining the team’s ownership group, which is controlled by majority partner Anthony Precourt.

McConaughey is joined by technology entrepreneur Eddie Margain, president and chief commercial officer of Dell technologies Marius Haas, and local energy executive Bryan Sheffield. The size and value of their respective stakes have not been reported.

Austin FC, which will join MLS in 2021, recently announced that it had received 35,000 season-ticket deposits, including an MLS record 30,000 in the first 24 hours of availability.

Recently, Houston Rockets guard James Harden bought a minority stake in the Houston Dynamo and sister team Houston Dash, while rapper Macklemore and singer Ciara and her husband, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, joined a group of new investors in the Seattle Sounders.
