The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has hailed record revenues of R$957m (€169.9m/$185.9m) for the 2019 financial year, stating that the results demonstrate it is now a large company in the domestic business sphere.
The CBF’s general assembly approved the financial statements at a meeting held yesterday (Tuesday), with the revenue figures marking a steep increase of 43.3 per cent on the R$668m generated in 2018.
The governing body said this can be attributed to three main elements – sponsorship deals, broadcast and commercial rights deals and the Legacy Fund from the country’s staging of the 2014 Fifa World Cup. In the sponsorship field, the CBF struck a significant deal with Italian automotive manufacturer Fiat in March 2019, while its revenue was also bolstered by the staging of the 2019 Copa America national team tournament.
The CBF has generally seen a significant increase in its revenue over the past decade. In 2010, the figure stood at R$263m, rising per year to R$647m in 2016. In 2017, the figure fell slightly to R$590m, but the CBF is now approaching the billion-real mark.
In 2018, the CBF reported R$318.9m in gross sponsorship revenues, a fall on the R$353.4m reported in 2017. Broadcast and commercial rights revenues totalled R$155.9m in 2018, up from R$95.6m in 2017.
The CBF’s surplus for the year was R$190m, which reflects an increase of 265 per cent over the previous year. The organisation’s total assets at the end of 2019 were R$1.25bn, a significant growth compared to the R$1.05bn recorded in 2018.
CBF president Rogério Caboclo said: “CBF is today a large Brazilian company, with management and results in proportion to its size. We reached over half a billion reals invested in national football in 2019 alone. If we consider the last three years, the amounts contributed exceed R$1.37bn.
“In 2019 we were successful where it matters most, which is on the pitch. The Brazilian teams were protagonists last year. We won the Copa América, the under-17 World Cup, the Toulon tournament, the under-15 South American tournament, as well as other grassroots tournaments abroad and in Brazil.
“The male and female teams guaranteed their presence at the Olympic Games. Our competitions have all been successfully completed. The Brazilian championship had a record attendance at the stadiums and we had a year of major investments in the national team and women’s football.”
