French Ligue 1 side Amiens SC is searching for a new shirt sponsor after sports retailer Intersport signalled its intention to depart from the club.
Amid the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak, the brand has decided not to extend its current deal beyond the end of the 2019-20 football season.
Amiens president, Bernard Joannin, indicated the club would has already begun its search for a replacement.
He told L’Equipe: “The [Intersport] directors told us a short time ago. I understand that they are prioritising their business and their jobs. We will react quickly, I have already made contacts, it is up to us to reinvent ourselves.”
The Intersport sponsorship is worth €400,000 ($435,400) per year to the Ligue 1 club, according to the Amiens-based Courrier Picard newspaper.
Intersport also has sponsorship contracts with fellow Ligue 1 teams, Marseille and Lille. It remains to be seen what will happen with these deals.
French football has been suspended amid the Covid-19 outbreak, with no formal resumption date currently set. Amiens currently sit in 19th place and stand to be relegated.
The impact of this on sponsorship has been in evidence elsewhere in Ligue 1, with Girondins de Bordeaux’s main sponsor, restaurant chain Bistrot Régent, suspending its contract with the club.
