Indian Premier League expels two teams

Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket teams the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab yesterday had their licences terminated by competition’s governing council for breaching ownership rules. The Royals were champions of the inaugural 2008 tournament.

Lalit Modi, suspended as chairman and commissioner of the IPL in April this year amid corruption allegations, was suspected to hold a stake in the two franchises.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, which organises the IPL, also issued a notice to new franchise Kochi demanding it resolves internal disputes over its ownership structure. The team was the subject of a comment by Modi on Twitter that triggered investigations into his alleged wrongdoings.

Yesterday Modi denied that an international request for his detention had been issued by India’s Enforcement Directorate.

The directorate wants to quiz him in India, but Modi – who is currently in London – does not want to return, saying there is “an elevated threat perception to his life”.
