Iconic US sports magazine Sports Illustrated will reportedly cut back its print run to become a monthly publication in 2020.
According to Yahoo, there will be 17 annual magazines from next year – one issue per month, plus four specials and the Swimsuit edition. SI was a weekly magazine just four years ago and a bi-weekly publication in 2018.
Furthermore, Yahoo reported that all content for each magazine must be completed more three weeks before the publication date, meaning that each copy – and specially the cover photos – will lack freshness.
Last month, SI laid off approximately half of its editorial staff after digital publishing firm The Maven took over operational control of the venerable title.
The layoffs came following a complex pair of deals involving the 65-year-old SI. Authentic Brands group this past spring paid $110m (€101m) to Meredith to acquire SI, but then signed another deal to license out out SI’s media operations to The Maven.
