San Francisco 49ers cheerleader takes knee during national anthem

The NFL national anthem saga made unexpected headlines when a San Francisco 49ers cheerleader took a knee during The Star Spangled Banner during Thursday night’s game against the Oakland Raiders.

The unnamed cheerleader was the only member of the squad to protest at Levi’s Stadium.

Viewers around the United States did not witness the protest as Fox, like most networks airing NFL games, are not televising the anthem live this season.

This is not the first time a 49ers cheerleader has taken a knee in protest. Two squad members did so before the team’s game in Santa Clara against Jacksonville last Christmas Eve, according to the San Jose Mercury News

The 49ers are the former team of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during the anthem as a protest against police brutality against African-Americans in 2016. He has been out of work since.

Cheerleader anthem protests also took place at the college level in 2017.
