Chai named CEO of Olympic Council of Malaysia

The Olympic Council of Malaysia has confirmed Michelle Chai as its new chief operating officer, to take office from October 7.

The 44-year-old is currently the general manager for the Badminton Association of Malaysia, and was previously the chief operating officer for the United Arab Emirates Football Association.

Chai said: “Having been fortunate enough to serve in two major sports, football and badminton, I am extremely motivated to play a role in the future of the organisation on behalf of the athletes and National Sports Associations.”

The OCM is responsible for Malaysia’s representation at the Olympic and Commonwealth games.

OCM president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria said there were 65 applicants for the position, and 90 per cent of them did not come from a sports background.

Norza, who is also BAM’s president, told the New Straits Times: “Michelle’s previous experiences at BAM, UAE FA and AFC (Asian Football Confederation) will stand her in good stead for the new role.

“We need someone who can inject more professionalism into OCM and bridge the gap between policymakers and the management, apart from dealing with bigger challenges ahead.”
