The International Basketball Federation (Fiba) has selected Australia as the host nation for the 2022 Fiba Women’s basketball World Cup.
The tournament will take place in the city of Sydney over ten days in September and October 2022.
The Australian bid was chosen ahead of Russia, the other country that made the final bidding to host Fiba’s flagship event in women’s basketball, having previously done so in 1994.
The USA are the current holders, having won the 2018 edition of the competition. Australia’s team, known as the Opals, were the runners up.
Fox Sports Australia reports that the country is planning to submit a bid for the men’s basketball World Cup in 2027.
The sponsorship and licensing rights for all Fiba events is handled by Wanda-owned sports marketing agency Infront, the long-term contract between the two organisations runs until 2033.
