Reuters reports that the federation (RFEF) received a tip-off from European football’s governing body Uefa that the targeted individuals and clubs may be involved in illegal betting. Last month, German police raids uncovered a major match-fixing operation covering several countries in Europe.
In a statement released yesterday, Las Palmas said, “The RFEF have started a disciplinary enquiry into Las Palmas, Rayo Vallecano and various footballers from other teams to investigate the participation of professional footballers in betting on matches.”
Las Palmas named seven players alleged to involved. Reuters reports that the most high-profile are goalkeeper Javier Lopez Vallejo, who plays at promoted La Liga club Real Zaragoza, and Rayo striker Piti.
