According to reports the city's sports authority contacted International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) officials in Berlin last month.
Sports bureau chief Sun Kanglin told the Beijing Youth Daily that the IAAF, world athletics governing body, will travel to Beijing to check facilities, probably in October.
It is believed the facilities proposed to host the Championships will include the iconic "Bird's Nest" Stadium that was built for the Olympics and has not staged any athletics event since last year's Summer Games.
Other contenders to host the 2015 event include Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro. The 2011 World Championships will be in Daegu, South Korea and Moscow in 2013.
