Under the new deal, Seven acquired the free-to-air rights from 2009-14, exclusive pay-TV rights from 2010-14 and exclusive new media rights for 2008-18.
Seven will produce coverage of the event in high definition for the first time in 2009 and will continue its role as producer of the global television coverage for the event. The agreement also gives Seven the rights to the Davis Cup and the Australian Open lead up tournaments.
Tennis Australia CEO Steve Wood said, "Seven Network provides an outstanding coverage of the Australian Open and is an integral part of its success. The fact that we have extended our partnership another five years is an enormous positive for our organisation and our sport."
David Leckie, CEO of the Seven Network said: "Under our new agreement with Tennis Australia, the Open will play a key role in our company as we expand our commitment to the event and leverage our coverage across an array of content delivery mechanisms: broadcast television, subscription television, online and other new media platforms. We are looking forward to working with Tennis Australia to further build on tennis’ deep connection with all Australians and the continuing and increasing success of the Open."
