SOUTH AFRICA 2010 COSTS ROCKET

The organising committee behind the 2010 FIFA World Cup says costs of staging the event have rocketed from 2.3bn rand ($303,670m) to 12bn rand ($1.58bn).

Committee chiefs say the price has risen due to the decision to build new stadiums rather than convert existing rugby venues, as originally planned.

Chief executive of the organising committee Danny Jordaan explained: “The stadiums have cost us more as we will be building five soccer specific stadiums.”

He also dismissed media claims building work was behind schedule.

South Africa will host the first ever World Cup to take place in Africa in four years time.
