NHL ties up eastern European TV deals

The National Hockey League has expanded its international reach by signing TV deals in a number of eastern European regions.

Czech Republic cable and satellite broadcaster Galaxie has reached a distribution deal with the NHL, incorporating a minimum of two games a week as well as the magazine show 'NHL Powerweek'.

An agreement has also been reached in Russia with new TV channel TV7 where NHL content is also available on NTV Plus. TV7 will show two games a week, also broadcasting coverage of the 2002 NHL All-Star Game and the Stanley Cup Finals.

Deals have also been struck in the emerging markets of Israel and Serbia, involving both Russian and Hebrew commentary.

The new deals indicate the popularity of ice hockey in eastern Europe which is fast becoming a key market for the NHL's international strategies.
