Three cities in the running to host 2021 World Games

The International World Games Association (IWGA) has confirmed bids from cities in the US, Russia and Peru for the 11th edition of the World Games multi-sport event in 2021.

Birmingham in Alabama, US, will battle it out against Ufa in Russia and Lima in Peru for the right to stage the event. The three cities applied to the IWGA before the bidding deadline of July 31, and the announcement of the host city will be made at the beginning of 2015 following the final round of presentations.

The IWGA Evaluation Committee will now analyse the bids and announce a shortlist of candidate host cities, before carrying out site visits. “We are looking forward to seeing how the applicant cities present themselves,” said José Perurena, who succeeded the long-serving Ron Froehlich as the new president of the IWGA in April.

The World Games is one of the biggest multi-sport events in the world, featuring more than 30 sports and attracting nearly 4,000 athletes to the most recent edition last year in Cali, Colombia. The 2017 event will take place in Wroclaw, Poland. Operating costs for hosts are relatively negligible given the IWGA’s insistence on using existing competition venues.

Birmingham expressed an interest in bidding for the 2020 summer Olympic Games, while Lima will host the Pan American Games in 2019.
